NOCSAE, the organization responsible for setting helmet performance standards, recently released an important statement indicating that attaching after-market products to helmets will void the manufacturer’s certification. This is important if you are using items such as impact sensors or accelerometers to monitor concussion patients or in conducting research. The implication is that whoever retrofits helmets with after-market products could be held liable for injuries sustained during use of the helmet. Use this link to read the document released by NOCSAE. Thank you to Erik Swartz, PhD., ATC at the University of New Hampshire for bringing this to our attention as we use sensors when monitoring our concussion patients!
There is at least one sensor that we know of that is still in development that is located in a band that is placed on the athlete’s head. This would not be an issue, but to date it is not yet on the market.
Oh. And by the way, Happy Holidays!
